Life is a pain in the neck
Darkness Down Under
Abyssic Hate is a one-man black metal project from Melbourne, Australia, formed in 1993 by Shane Rout.
Rooted in the sound and aesthetics of Norwegian Black Metal and associated with Depressive Suicidal Black Metal (DSBM) due to its lyrical leanings and artworks, the band is known for its raw, lo-fi sound influenced by Burzum and Darkthrone.
Its lyrics focus on themes of depression, suicide, misanthropy, and anti-human sentiment, with Rout expressing a belief that “99.9% of humans should be terminated.” Key releases include the debut demo “Cleansing of an Ancient Race” (1994), the EP “Eternal Damnation” (1998), and the sole full-length album “Suicidal Emotions” (2000), praised for its trance-like, repetitive atmosphere.
The project, often limited in production runs, gained underground traction but stirred controversy for Rout’s uncompromising and unapologetic stance. Abyssic Hate ended in 2020, as announced by Rout, leaving a polarizing legacy as a DSBM pioneer.
