Maquahuitl is an American black metal band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2011. Named after an Aztec weapon, the band is led by founding member Martín Morales Tudón (Yahualcuauhli Eztli) and focuses on themes of ancient Mesoamerican culture, particularly Anahuac (Mexico), and indigenous pride.

Their music blends raw, aggressive black metal with melodic and atmospheric elements, incorporating influences from Mexican folk, norteño, and cumbia music, such as requinto-style guitar scales and Latin percussion. This creates a distinctive sound that sets them apart from traditional Scandinavian black metal, resonating with a fierce, culturally rooted identity.

Their discography includes albums like “At the Altar of Mictlampa” (2020), “Con Su Pistola en La Mano” (2021), and “Teocalli of the Sacred War”, as well as splits with bands like Ifernach and Hellfire Deathcult.

Notable tracks include “Laceration Winds and Journey of Desolation” and “El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez,” the latter inspired by the Mexican-American folk hero.

Maquahuitl’s lyrics often explore pre-Hispanic mythology, resistance against colonial forces, and ancestral reconnection, with their 2020 concept album “At the Altar of Mictlampa” depicting Quetzalcoatl’s return to judge humanity.
