Riders of a Cold and Violent Wind
Illuminated by the Black Sun
Spear of Longinus is an Australian black metal band formed in Brisbane in 1993 by founders Camazotz (Glenn Miller) and Baal Mjollnir (Lee Griffiths), who previously played together in the band Equimanthorn.
Known for their provocative and controversial presence in the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) scene, the band draws lyrical inspiration from Third Reich occultism, esoteric mysticism, and elements of Indian religious concepts like Kali-Yuga and yoga, blended with national socialist themes.
Their music initially rooted in raw black metal, evolved to incorporate influences from different genres, with albums like “The Yoga of National Socialism” (2002) showcasing a distinctive “Oi” punk sound.
The band gained notoriety with their 1995 demo “Nazi Occult Metal” and debut album “Domni Satnasi” (1997), which stirred public attention after a 1997 Brisbane Sunday Mail article highlighted their role in a growing nationalist music scene.
Their name, derived from the apocryphal Nikodemus Gospel, refers to the spear that pierced Jesus Christ, symbolizing both good and evil in their ideology, and is tied to Trevor Ravenscroft’s book “The Spear of Destiny”, which links the spear to Adolf Hitler’s supposed power.
The band’s controversial beliefs led to performance bans in Australia and Europe, limited live appearances, and issues with distribution, such as Rough Trade refusing to distribute a Grand Belial’s Key album due to a band member wearing a Spear of Longinus T-shirt.
After a hiatus following their 1999 EP “Nada Brahma”, during which Griffiths and SS Death Dealer formed the thrash band Vomitor, Camazotz relaunched the band in 2001 with a new lineup, including undisclosed live members as of 2018.
Despite their underground status and limited mainstream recognition, they maintain a cult following in the Australian metal scene, with bands like Deströyer 666 citing them as an influence.
Their discography includes albums like “Nothing Is Forever, and, Forever Is Nothing” (2006) and “…and the Swastikalotus” (2007), reflecting steady output despite censorship and legal challenges.
